Rick Nelson wrote this song after he played a Rock Revival concert in 1971 at Madison Square Garden. He received a negative response from the crowd: the fans had different expectations of the setlist Rick played that night. Hence the title "Garden Party" and the references to his experience written in the lyrics, which also to apply to life in general:

A dear friend reminded me of this Doves track a few days ago and it really hit the nail on the head.
